Managing water scarcity in European and Chinese cropping systems

On September 2020, FAFU organised a farmer training event in Longyan City, Fujian Province. Water Resources Efficient Management Technology Demonstration and Promotion, the sub-project undertaken by Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University, has carried out a campaign aiming at promoting the efficient use of water resource use to farmers and the public in southern China.

Around 180 farmers attended this three-day event. Farmers learnt about nutrient management and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation. AWD is a water saving technique that FAFU has found to result in a rice grain yield increase of 4.8% compared to rice under continuously flooded irrigation.

Since the beginning of the project, the team members have carried out activities such as “Water conservation talent training” and “Farmer training” in Changting and Anxi counties of Fujian province. They also conducted in-house talk for 1000 impoverished households during this campaign. Up to now, they have disseminated more than 2,300 brochures and trained more than 180 agricultural technicians.
