SUMMARY:Quantifying the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum
DESCRIPTION:In-person workshop at Lancaster University on 15 December 2021. Hybrid event- Register online (Eventbrite) for in-person or webinar attendance.\n \nTo register: https://www.eventbrite.es/e/quantifying-the-soil-plant-atmosphere-continuum-tickets-221320705187 \nSoils provide multiple services to society: supporting food production by supplying resources to nourish crop growth\, regulating global water and nutrient cycles and sequestering CO2. Nevertheless\, human activities can result in significant\, although often insidious\, degradation of soil that compromises its ability to deliver these services. With climate change causing changes in rainfall patterns (frequency and intensity)\, there is increasing interest in managing agricultural systems to ensure their resilience. This might include using new crop varieties that can minimise soil erosive losses\, and/or or adding soil amendments might enhance the ability of crops to acquire resources. When water is scarce\, judicious irrigation scheduling can enhance crop water use efficiency\, but this relies on soil and/or plant sensors that can integrate plant perception of its environment. A range of measurement techniques\, both under development and commercially available\, offer new opportunities to better manage soil and water. \n\n09:30-10:15 – John Quinton (Lancaster)\n\nDetecting soil degradation and restoration\n\n\n10:15-10:35 – Ryan Edge (Lancaster)\n\nRoot-soil interactions enhancing crop-soil functions \n\n\n10:35-10:55 – Vasileios Giannakopoulos (Lancaster)\n\nSurfactant effects on plant water relations\n\n\n10:55-11:15 Katharina Huntenburg (Lancaster & NIAB)\n\nUsing MRI to quantify soil and tuber water content of potatoes\n\n\n\nCOFFEE BREAK \n\n11:45-12:15 – Andy Hirons (Lancaster & Myerscough College)\n\nNovel techniques for irrigating trees in the nursery \n\n\n12:15-12:45 – Tony Peloe (Delta-T Devices\, UK)\n\nCommercial developments in soil water instrumentation \n\n\n\nLUNCH \nAfternoon Workshop \nTony will be available after lunch to demonstrate a range of instruments and interact in-person with LEC researchers \n

SUMMARY:Exploring the value of long-term data sets to develop and evaluate agricultural management practices
DESCRIPTION:June 23\, 10:00-11.00 (Central European Summer Time) \nSpeakers \nProf. Dr. Andreas Klik\, University of Natural resources and Life Sciences Vienna\, Austria\nDr. Peter Strauss\, Director of the Austrian Federal Agency for Water Management\nGunther Liebhard MSc\, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna\, Austria \n\nWebinar report \nForty participants\, with over 40% comprising ECRs\, attended this event. Although participants were predominantly from EU countries\, the wide appeal of the subject matter resulted in participants from outside the SHui consortium attending\, including from Hungary\, India and Pakistan. \nLong-term data sets are essential for scientists to identify and understand agriculture’s ecological and environmental consequences to inform land managers and policy makers. They provide data that may also be used to develop theoretical models and to calibrate and validate simulation models. Long-term data can act as platforms for collaborative studies\, thus promoting multidisciplinary research.   \nThe webinar probed the following questions: \n\nWhat are the benefits of long-term measurements at plot and catchment scales?\nDo we measure the relevant parameters for hydrological modeling at catchment scale?\nHow can I benefit from SHui’s long-term data curation?\nHow can I use SHui data for decision making and agro-environmental modeling?\n\nSlides for download. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:EIP-Agri Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Healthy soils for Europe: sustainable management through knowledge and practice. \n \nHealthy soils are fundamental to the  sustainable production  of food\, feed  and fibre. In addition\, healthy soils  provide many other functions that contribute to human well-being such as water filtering\, carbon sequestration\, nutrient cycling and biodiversity conservation. Soil health is affected by unsustainable management  practices. This includes  frequent tillage\, which accelerates soil organic  matter loss\, incorrect use of agrochemicals\, which leads to soil and water pollution\, and irrigation practices causing salinisation problems. \nClimate  change  may also  affect soils  in  different ways.  More frequent  heavy  rainfalls  and drought  periods  can increase erosion\, nutrient and pollutant leaching\, soil carbon losses and soil salinisation.  On the positive side\, practices improving  soil health can mitigate or even reverse these negative effects\, including the impacts of climate change. \nThe specific objectives of the seminar are: \n\nRaise awareness of the importance of soil health and introduce various EU initiatives undertaken to preserve it\, such as EJP soil and the proposed EU mission “Caring for Soil is Caring for Life”.\nPromote and build upon the results and outcomes of past EIP-AGRI networking activities such as Focus Groups on soil-related issues and relevant workshops.\nShare experiences and good practices to maintain soil health\, identified by relevant projects\, research activities and farmers.\nIdentify synergies between different types of projects working on soil health and encourage further cooperation among participants through networking.\nDiscuss challenges and solutions for soil health\, and identify what is needed to make these solutions operational for farmers\, foresters and other land managers\, and make them widely used/adopted.
